Analog vs Digital 1 – Postal Mails

In Olden Days when the life was slow and easy going, almost all activities in the surroundings went at their own sweet pace,  starting with the first

Hobby – Philately ;

Lets explore how the Philately – Postal Mails has transformed from that easy going environment into digitalized world

                  ANALOG                         DIGITAL
Postage / Mails / Philately
  1. Physical Envelops/Packages/Mails travelling from one place to other.
  1. No physical movement, transfer of messages over cables / Wire free environments.
    2.   Time consuming2.   Instantaneous transfer, Almost No time Lapse
    3.  Pay as use, by way of postage stamps affixed on the Parcels being sent.

3.  No physical movement, transfer of messages over cables / Wire free environments, Costs are fixed, sort of time bound not limited to the number of mails.

4.   High employment opportunities for the operation of Postal departments, worldwide4.   Employments opportunities are drastically reduced.

5.  Adjacent opportunities like Hobby enthusiasts, Memorabilia, Creating Historic values.

5.  Other opportunities like creating historic values are almost non existent.

Thus Both sides of Postal or Mail worlds in the Analog Vs Digital Environments have pros and cons.

Moore's Law & Digital Marketing

moore's_law

Moore’s Law and Digital Marketing

Moore's Law & Digital Marketing

MOORE'S LAW

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore wrote a paper in 1965, mentioning number of transistors per sq inch in Circuit Doubled every year since the Moore's Law & Digital Marketing  invention of  IC.  Later Mr. Moore revised his observation ( Law ) saying that Number of transistors on a chip would double every Eighteen months. Which has held pretty much true till 2013 / 2014,  when the annual rate of CPU transistor-count increase started to gradually  slow down.

WHAT IT MEANS

that technology innovation  continue speed up of computing processes. The effect is that the computational power DOUBLES and the COSTS  are cut in half every eighteen months. Computation power doubles,  Size of Devices reduce and also the Prices of devices.

EFFECTS

we have seen with every passing  year technology has seen unprecedented positive changes.. Technology getting more advance and cheaper over time, this kind of growth and positive change in unseen in traditional economic business models. With the accessibility to devices increases, users increase, Mobile Phone devices leading the change.

OUTCOMES

Moore's Law lays a guidance on foundation which is driving efforts for incredible innovations and changes. When the Technological growth is at such a faster pace, the effects of growth are visible more widely, not only visible in the infrastructure / hardware  but also the creativity  aspects. THINK OF SOMETHING INTERESTINGLY CREATIVE AND YOU GET THE APPLICATION AS YOU HAVE HARDWARE TO RUN THAT APPLICATION / PROCESS.  Facebook Leading the  pack,  followed by Linkedin and  Twitter. Photo rich sites started gaining ground.

EXAMPLE

GOOGLE which has dominated the Internet world predominantly  and provides much of its services for FREE in part by being able to exploit Moore's Law. We have free emails, Powerful search engines, Earth Maps etc, Thanks to  the revenues  generating with the digital marketing.

One example I would like to specially Quote is the example of I-PHONE  by  Apple, The fast pace  technological  advancement in hardware helped Apple co. to create I-PHONE and  Replaced older models with newer versions at very short Period gaps.  Not only the I-PHONE as devices got improved, but also offered new apps  and  faster capabilities for  processing  complex programs like  games etc

PRESENT and  FUTURE

Technicians are now facing bottlenecks  to accomodate  more transistors onto processors, for the simple reason - TINY ALSO HAS A LIMIT, you can’t shrink something to non. Now operating quite literally on an atomic level. By  2013 transistor nodes width had reached to around 50 silicon atoms (22 nanometres), and presently this figure has reduced further. Sooner we’ll have transistor nodes so narrow that electrons may be able to leak across them through the process known as quantum tunneling, resulting into  computational errors. There ends the validity of Moore’s Law .

Being replaced with new principle, called Nielsen’s law – applied to network bandwidth. It’s about doubling yearly growth of fastest Internet connections. ( Discuss in Subsequent Post )

Mobile Marketing

Mobile Marketing

Mobile Marketing or chaos

One day I was driving  to a branded showroom  to buy a shirt for myself,  when my phone started ringing.

“Sir, Calling from Lung Fung Hotel, we are having Chinese food Festival, We would like you to visit our food festival !!”  Last time you visited , you wrote appreciating reviews  about food in the comments  book.

“Let me see !” I said,  and  disconnected.

I had moved a little , when phone again  rang, I picked the call..

“Sir, Your shoes must have torn  , It’s high time you should buy new one !!”

Who is calling ? I asked , How do you know my shoes  are torn?

Sir, I am calling from Robust Footwear, You purchased Pair of shoes, one and half year back from our store, our computer is reminding that your shoes must  have worn out   or are about to get  torn !!

“How do you know that I have only one pair of shoes ??”  I asked.  You need not remind me when to buy new shoes !!!   saying this I disconnected.

..and immediately another call received, This time a gentleman was reminding of Car service, telling  it is over due by six months. I was annoyed, and responded on high tone, “ I service my car or not, it is non of your business”  disconnecting the phone.

No sooner I disconnected , phone buzzed again !

“Sir, Should I book Tickets for movie Padman in matinee show at Inox Theater?” this time it was a Lady for a change…..

Why ?, I asked.

Sir, Our Data system is telling that you watch all the movies of actor Akshay, that’s, why…

..Tired of telling No,  I replied Ok,  book the ticket, and tried to finish the call, the lady replied  back, thanks sir, I am passing your phone number to Ms Pinky, who in our records has always been booking tickets for you..  scared ..

I said,  LEAVE  it !  and disconnected.

Reached the store, selected my shirt of choice and went to billing counter,

“Sir, What is your mobile number ?” asked  cashier.

“I will not give !” I said.

Sir you will get 20% Loyalty discount, if you give your mobile number.

“I will not give” I said adamantly.   My mobile number has circulated so much that this mobile marketing  interfering in my personal free time !!!      it looks.......

Tomorrow Barber will call and say, your hair must be long, you need haircut..

Or the casket service will call on mobile and tell, who knows your children will care after your death!

better you book your coffin of choice in time !!!

Changing Landscape of Digital Marketing

Landscape of digital marketing

Changing Landscape of Digital Marketing

LANDSCAPE OF DIGITAL MARKETING BETWEEN 2013 AND 2018

YEAR 2013

Come 2013, Moore’s Law  the oldest and  famous digital principle,  with the inception of digital technology,   thought to have laid foundation to bring   the digital evolution. This law  started seeing its downfall with the limitation on  stretching  the boundaries of innovation in growth of  Transistor density per inch area.
By this year Facebook placed  as  king, with wider reach  and having  a  clear  dominance  over social media landscape. Its widespread  reach  can be attributed to  improved  availability of  household computers and the widely-accessed digital channel. This is a clear  outcome of  reducing  costs  while increasing processing  power of computing  devices,  which wouldn’t be possible without small chips and processors.
Internet  horizon is seeing a  change –  increasing number of users choosing to browse Internet on their mobile  devices, which makes up to 13% of net browsing in total. Additionally, Facebook shared 78% percent of its users logged in on their mobile devices that year. This, again, wouldn’t be possible without low  cost  mobile Devices.
It means adapting  for marketers. Social media marketing focuses on Facebook mostly ( other platforms  at  their  nascent  stages ) and the brains of Facebook  think to switch from paid ads to paid content – signaling the rise of content marketing.
The Axe campaign made by Unilever ( ones with the Axe-effect, where girls chase the guys after application) win awards – so shouting at customers is still in craze.

YEAR 2014

Moore’s law in its essence  still driving  the steady rise of Mobile platform and its applications.
In Social Media space, Facebook still at apex  but  other platforms started  reaping rewards of their foresight – platforms like LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram are on the rise and engagement among user  increasing.
Growth of low cost and faster processing ( Moore’s law ) reflects its effectiveness as the handheld devices spread in consumers increases and provides benefit from  applications but with it’s limitations when it comes to  the picture-based platforms . which were  held  back due to slow loading  – faster bandwidth means faster loading, too – Nielsen’s law relevance becomes at play.
For marketers, scope of reaching consumers widens  meaning  multi-platform marketing. As the messages need to follow the audience, if audience has to be reached effectively.
Coca Cola increases the reach of its ‘Share A Coke’ campaign that started in the previous year, with popular names on the bottles and it’s a massive success. It’s also a multi-channel campaign, heavily advertised at digital and at shelf. It’s one of the most famous marketing endeavors nowadays, and it tapped the millennial need for individuality – also something reinforced by portability of devices.

YEAR 2015

Economics of smaller and cheaper processors are now changing into smaller processors with innovation which  means complete technology change – neural, brain-like parts,  which infact has  high  cost  to produce.
Moore’s law continues to drive the development of wearables, Interestingly  smart watches could not gain popularity  as mobiles. Probably on account  of limited usability !!  People are talking about changing materials driving the development, it’s just not about the size anymore.  Also, Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming quite crucial  makes it ripe for future marketing.
Coincidentally, mobile messaging is on the rise. Platforms like Twitter and Snapchat are truly becoming big, again owing a lot to smaller chip size. Pinterest and Instagram double their engaged users and Facebook continues to have a strong presence.
Marketing persons than has to gear  up for wearables based marketing, thing-and-appliance based marketing but also, content marketing is very much in – facilitated by Moore’s, but mostly driven by Nielsen’s law.
MOOCs ( Massive Open Online Courses ) like Coursera  and Udemy  gaining  momentum (part of the strategy to market the University online by providing content).
Coca Cola also demonstrates brand awareness, pulling the vision together in the ‘One brand’ campaign. This marks the rising importance of brand messages and being cohesive when talking to audiences.

YEAR 2016

Likes of Pinterest, Instagram, Linkedin are gaining foothold among audiences, each creating a niche for themself. But wide segment of social media is still under dominance of  Facebook attracting almost 80% of all Internet users.
The content should be easily  accessible across all devices. Reach of mobile devices increasing. Lowering of device costs drives expansion of mobiles , but the cost of data access and the speed of downloads playing crucial role. Moore’s law is factor for the devices, but it’s all about the bandwidth or speed of internet access  nowadays.
Economics of development with huge constraints reducing relevance of Moore’s Law
– smaller chips are not cheaper to produce anymore.
Bandwidth is gaining increased relevance  for marketing! Cloud computing means making our devices faster not by inserting more chips but by connecting  them to  various external Internet solutions.
Digital Marketing is seeing a fast paced evolution, due to fast growth of fractured audience having excess to  varying devices, which is making measuring of consumer behaviour more complex.
Analytics increasingly getting sophisticated. Digital Marketing getting more and more dependent on Analytics, making  it more of automated  and spontaneous  efforts.
IoT - Internet of Things is another development gaining its ground very rapidly ( Discuss in subsequent post )
Coca Cola makes its ‘One brand’ campaign global, with excellent results. Convergence and consistency across platforms pay off, so does customer experience marketing model.

YEAR 2017

Dominance of internet in the people’s life  influenced everything, how consumers work , how they  shop and how they use  media and other available  resources. Along with this changing consumer  behaviour  marketing changed with it. Marketing to reach  consumers continued to evolve from Moore’s Law era to New era of Neilson’s Law, with evolving Intent and methods,  Like Internet of Things and a whole host of other methods and principles, like Augmented reality and Artificial Intelligence.
The Mobile devices are at  their best, the website analytics market is flooded with companies but smart marketers are needed – to make sense of the rapid change and connect the brand with consumers.
These days  advertisements , tries to address the audiences and reach the carefully-measured segments. It was Digital arena,  started by the small chips with a drive of  Moore’s law, now  graduating  to increased bandwidth of Nielsen’s law.

 YEAR 2018

CONTENT IS KING.
Now the Marketing has reached to micro levels. Content has become Spine of Internet  and the Broadband/ fibre optics becoming Nerves.
Marketing Activity 67%  still has prime interest in Facebook as top preferred social media for reaching consumers, followed by Linkedin and other platforms

social media shareSource - Social Media Examinar

Investments

Gaming, Education and Healthcare  are expected to be the priority  industries, attracting most investments and interests of consumers, Thus generating major  interest area for marketing innovations.

Future Investment sectors

The commonality here is that change comes in waves – sometimes large, sometimes small. But marketers need to be aware of the rhythm and this what Moore’s Law  and Nielsen’s Law provide – a certain predictability of trends. Moore’s Law might be out but the law influenced everything – and the change isn’t over, the impacts just  carry  on , with renewed vigour and targets but with similar objective -

GROWTH and MOVING FORWARD

Nielsen’s Law of Internet Bandwidth

Nielsen’s Law of Internet Bandwidth

BANDWIDTH

Nielsen’s Law of Internet Bandwidth states that a user’s connection speed grows by 50% per year. Unlike  Moore’s Law, which tells us that computing power doubles every 18 months ( in equivalent terms grows by 60% per year ).

Nielsen's Law of Internet Bandwidth

Nielsen attributes the slower growth of Internet bandwidth to three factors:
  • Upgrading infrastructure is complicated and expensive. Telecoms companies are conservative. They need to dig up streets and install equipment in hundreds of thousands of central offices so they think twice (or thrice) before investing the necessary billions of dollars. Even after they invest, it takes time to update their sprawling physical plant.
  • Users are reluctant to spend money on bandwidth. If you buy twice as fast a computer, your software runs twice as fast; if you buy twice as large a harddisk, you can store twice as many files. But if you buy twice as fast a modem, then you don't download web pages twice as fast: the speed of the internet is a function of both the individual user's connectivity and of the infrastructure. You don't get the full benefits of your own bandwidth upgrades immediately — only gradually as the internet and the host servers improve.
  • The user base is getting broader all the time as mainstream users get online. These new users are more likely to be low-end users than high-end users (all the geeks have been online for years), so the average shifts ever lower.
Of course, there are many technologies to deliver faster bandwidth, on  optical fiber. Unfortunately, these technologies will time to mature enough to be consumed by users.
The vast masses of users are low-end and will lag 2–3 years behind the high-end users. Bandwidth is one of the two most important elements in computing these days (together with screen quality), since computational speeds are almost always more than enough for non-engineering tasks.
Nielsen's Law of Internet Bandwidth has its relevance, but the cost of using services has its logical implication, most users still save on bandwidth and prefer a moderate bandwidth at a moderate price to the highest-speed at highest-cost option.

Reason to create Blog

reason to create blog

Reason to create Blog

Reason to create blog ? or  a  Website

Should you create a Blog of your own !!!

Well , If I can  put this question as, Why do we create our House ?

Most common answer will be…..

BASIC  Reason “ To have physical place which  helps us safeguard our belongings and family  from weather and wild animals danger “.

In addition to the basic reason above,

SOCIAL reason “ House  provides us an Identity and location ( ADDRESS ) of our existence “

PERSONAL reason - “ House  provides us a place to Learn, Create, Develop and Grow “.

All the above reasons put together we call it a HOME in  PHYSICAL WORLD.

We are witnessing a parallel digital world which is rapidly expanding.  This can not be overlooked, this explosive growth is due to fast developing technological advances, thus creating a VIRTUAL WORLD.

Whoever is willing to have their existence in this virtual world , would surely need a home , to register their existence. Here comes the  necessity of owning an address for all the reasons for owning a house as mentioned above. This can be done by way of creating your own Blog  or Website, thus is the reason to create blog or website.

Now, What could we achieve  with this Blog or website ?

>  You can display your creativity, which could be  anything like Cooking skills, Art skills, Subject Knowledge Sharing  etc.

>  It helps you develop  writing skills.

>  Helps you develop a platform to project you as an expert in your area of interest. May be can help you make a published book author !!

>  Helps you monetize your efforts.

>  Can create  Communities with like mind/ Interest  people.

>  Can help  motivate people by setting your  example.

Before Moving to - HOW TO CREATE PERSONAL  BLOG / WEBSITE,

I created couple of  blogs  ( links below)  on  free platforms, one on wordpress   and another at Blogger

Search Keywords

Find Topic of Interest

Search Keywords to find your topic of  interest

a) How much you love that topic

b) Are you ready to be expert in that topic.

c) Is there audience interested in your topic

Identify  the area of interest which gives you a drive to Write, Discuss or Show. This is crucial as it will  continuously motivates  you with the drive and ideas  to  update your blog with your new posts.

Lastly, you should have willingness to dive deeper  into your  topic of interest,  so that it widens your knowledge and helps you to add values  to your newer posts, as you become expert in your area of interest.

Example - Search for “ Healthy food Recipes” in google search

google search

On analysing the Search result screen, two major points to note

  1.  How Many Searches were there for search word/Phrase

  2. Does it show any Sponsored/Paid AD  on top of results

The More number of searches means, there are higher  number  of  users who are  searching on this topic.    The Paid/Sponsored advertisements on top of results  means that companies are paying for their advertisements  because they are able to make money.

In summary the Key word searches with High volume and Paid Ads are very likely to get you blog to reach high number of audience.

Than what are the topics which are of interest  to people !!

We can search  using ADWORDS  for free.   HOW ?  Lets explore
